Texas DPS requires individuals under the age of 18 to take a driver education course. The driver must complete the course and present the DE-964 driver education certificate to the DPS driver license office. An individual may begin the classroom phase at the age of 14, but they cannot apply for a driver’s learner license until they are at least 15 years old.
A driver’s education course in Texas consists of 32 hours of theory instruction with a licensed instructor. During the classroom phase, the learner will have to complete 7 hours of behind the wheel training with the licensed instructor. The learner will also have to participate in an in-car observation activity. Finally, they will have to complete 30 hours * of behind the wheel practice with the professional qualified adult.
